We are now able to book group volunteering dates going forward. We can only accept groups and not individuals just yet. We require volunteers to be over 18yrs old and fit enough to be on your feet for 5 hours. We must continue to keep everybody safe.
As The Whitechapel Mission cares for our most vulnerable guests in the face of COVID-19, we are supported by volunteers in activities adjusted for social distancing and safety as much as possible. We ask volunteers to "trust your judgement" when it comes to wearing masks, staying safe and keeping our guests safe.
As the government relaxes restrictions we still need volunteers to be healthy to serve. You should not volunteer if you or someone in your household:
- Have tested positive for COVID-19 within the last 5 days.
- Have experienced any cold or flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal issues in the last 5 days
- Have been in contact with a person diagnosed with COVID-19 within the last 5 days.
- Have been outside the UK and have not yet had a negative "day 2" test (required for unvaccinated travelers).
- Are currently required to self-isolate.
- We ask volunteers to consider wearing a mask if serving at the counter.

We have NOT yet opened our Christmas volunteering programme. We will only be able to accept groups and not individuals and only a limited number of people for this year. We require volunteers to be over 18yrs old and fit enough to be on your feet for 5 hours. Please understand, we must keep everybody safe.

Volunteers must be healthy to serve.
We hope to open these dates within the next week or two.

Our goal is to encourage volunteering as a concept, as we all want to make a difference when we see people sleeping in a doorway or struggling with homelessness. And we shouldn't have to pay for the opportunity to volunteer.
We want volunteering at Whitechapel to be fun, rewarding, challenging and free. The skills, opinions and experiences of each volunteer are valued and we want them to be an integral part of the organization.
Our volunteering programme is designed for teams rather than individuals. Volunteers can come in small or large teams. Many work together in the city or in Canary Wharf, and choose to assist within the Mission before going on to work each day.
The Whitechapel Mission began in 1876 and much of our work would never have been possible without the support of thousands of volunteers. Today, volunteers play a crucial role, working with homeless people, providing essential administrative support or raising much-needed funds.
If you decide you would like to volunteer with us and book a date, then we would expect you to show up. Of course, there may always be very good reasons which may force you to cancel, but we do need a high level of commitment once agreeing to volunteer. Failing to show is likely to result in us not being able to accept another request to volunteer.

Every day The Whitechapel Mission helps as many as 300 people. Many of them come to us because they are living on the streets or have become homeless through family breakdown, violence, poverty or discrimination. Others may be unfairly threatened with eviction, or living in property that is damp, dangerous or overcrowded.
- 15% of people supported by the Whitechapel Mission have been in the armed services.
- 32% of people using our services have been in care at some point.
- 60% of people using our services come from dysfunctional families.
- 38% of people using our services have been in prison.
We acknowledges and offer a special thank you to those partners and supporters, who have backed their giving of gifts and volunteering with a donation of £5000 or more each year. It is only with this commitment that our work may continue.
Membership of the 5000-club offers:
- The use of our name and logo within your publications and reports, as a priority partner with the Mission
- Unlimited and priority access to the volunteers diary months ahead of others organizations
- Acknowledgment in our annual report and all our publications
- A high level of reporting - showing the dates, times and names of volunteers from your organization who attend the Mission
- 12 month membership

Our volunteering programme is designed for teams rather than individuals. There are always days in our diary when it is not possible to find a team to volunteer. It is easier to find a team of people rather than a group of individuals for a particular day.
